City end a disappointing season on a low note

Elgin City wrapped up a disappointing season with defeat at Annan through goals either side of half time from David Hopkirk and Martin McNiff.

There was little of note in the opening half hour during which the home side were doing most of the pressing - although they had only poor attempts from McNiff and Hopkirk to show for their efforts.

That changed in the 32nd minute when Annan took the lead, Hopkirk unleashing an effort from outside the area that flew into the bottom corner of the net.

With 40 minutes on the clock Elgin finally managed an attempt on goal of their own, a good effort from Paul Harkins that was well saved by Arthur. Right on the half time whistle Harkins had another effort but this time he did not trouble the home goalkeeper as the ball skidded wide of the upright.

It was more of the same at the start of the second period, Shane Sutherland having a go early doors that went wide before McNiff again tried his luck at the other end without troubling Gibson.

Stephen Black came close for Annan but they did finally put the points to bed on the hour mark, McNiff having more luck with his head than he had with his boot when he rose to nod a Mitchell cross into the City net.

Gibson remained the busier goalkeeper, forced to make blocks from efforts by Bradley and McNiff before Craig Gunn came close for Elgin with another effort that flew wide of target.

The game - and Elgin’s season - fizzled out with Annan looking forward to the promotion play-offs while Elgin must now begin rebuilding for a stronger challenge next season.
